How to Apply for a Work Permit in Kenya: Procedures and Requirements

If you’re a foreigner planning to work in Kenya, you will require a work permit. A work permit is a legal document issued by the Kenyan government that allows non-Kenyan nationals to work in the country. This blog post will provide you with the step-by-step process of how to apply for a work permit in Kenya, including the procedures and requirements.

Step 1: Determine the type of work permit you need

Before applying for a work permit, you need to decide on the type of work permit you need. The Kenyan government provides different types of work permits based on the duration of stay, the type of work you’ll be doing, and your qualifications.

The types of work permits are as follows:

  • Class A permit – issued to investors and business owners who have invested a minimum of $100,000 in Kenya.
  • Class B permit – for highly skilled workers, such as doctors, engineers, and IT specialists.
  • Class C permit – issued to employees who earn a minimum of Kshs. 30,000 per month.
  • Class D permit – for domestic workers or informal sector employees.

Step 2: Gather the required documents

Once you’ve determined the type of work permit you need, you’ll have to gather the necessary documents. These documents include:

  • A valid passport with at least six months’ validity
  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • A duly completed work permit application form
  • Educational and professional certificates
  • A letter of offer or employment contract
  • A Police Clearance Certificate from your home country
  • A medical certificate issued by a Kenyan government-approved hospital
  • A business registration certificate (for Class A permits)
  • A recommendation letter from the employer (for Class B permits)

Step 3: Submit your application

You can submit your work permit application online or in-person at the Department of Immigration Services. If you opt for an online application, you will need to create an account on the eCitizen Kenya website.

To submit your application in person, you will need to visit the immigration office in Nairobi or the regional office closest to you.

Step 4: Pay the application fees

The fees for the work permit application depend on the type of work permit you’re applying for, and the duration of your stay in Kenya. The fees range from Kshs. 10,000 to Kshs. 200,000.

You can pay the fees using the government’s online platform, M-Pesa, or in person at the immigration office.

Step 5: Wait for your application approval

The processing time for a work permit application can take several weeks to several months. Once approved, the immigration department will issue you with a work permit that is valid for either one or two years, depending on the type of permit you applied for.

Remember to renew your work permit before it expires if you wish to stay and work in Kenya. We hope this blog post has been helpful in guiding you on how to apply for a work permit in Kenya.
